For the first time in 3 years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s official jerseys are not the one-two punch at the top of the list of best-selling customized jerseys in the U.S. according to World Soccer Shop.
Manchester United’s duo of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba have claimed the top spot at the start of the 2016/17 European campaign. The surge in jersey sales for each player is no surprise with both signing with the Red Devils this summer.
The outspoken Ibrahimovic teased his move on social media days before confirming Old Trafford as his final destination while Pogba’s world record transfer fee of $118 million did the talking for him. The signings quickly made Manchester United one of the favorites to win the Premier League.
“The fact that the Ibrahimovic and Pogba customized jerseys are so popular is no big surprise,” Jeff Stephens, World Soccer Shop’s General Manager, told Soccer365. “But the fact that the Red Devils’ duo knocked Messi and Ronaldo out of the top spots is a shock.”
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the faces of their teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, and the game globally. Neither their play on the field or sales of their jerseys off the field have been challenged for the past 3 years. The 2 players have finished 1-2 in the Ballon d’Or every year since 2011 as the top players in the world.
And the phenomenon is not isolated to the U.S. UK media reported that Ibrahimovic’s jersey did over $101 million in sales in the first WEEK after signing while Pogba helped re-pay some of his transfer fee with $252 million in sales over the first 3 weeks after his signing.
