The U.S. men’s national team came up short in securing a berth at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup when they failed to win this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup and the Stars and Stripes are now faced with preparing for their one-game playoff with Mexico on October 10.

Jurgen Klinsmann called his 23-man roster for the final 2 friendlies, against Peru, which finished third in Copa America this summer, on Sept. 4 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. and vs Brazil at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday.

Tim Howard is back on the roster after his 1 year self-imposed hiatus from national team duties.  The roster also features Matt Besler, Jermaine Jones, and Geoff Cameron all who played at the 2014 FIFA World Cup but missed out on this year’s Gold Cup.

“The bigger picture is to get some answers for how we put things together for the Mexico game a month from now,” said Klinsmann. “Obviously we want to continue to have a good flow of guys from the Gold Cup, but also to bring back guys who are in position to compete for a spot on the roster for Oct. 10.  Our message to these guys is simple: prove a point that you want to be at the Rose Bowl.”

Klinsmann is falling back on his experienced core from the player pool with an average of nearly 27 caps for the 23-man roster.  3 players have 50+ caps while only 5 have 10 or fewer.  SV Sandhausen forward Andrew Wooten is the only player making his first appearance in an MNT camp.

The 2 big names missing from the roster are Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey but the Toronto FC midfielder and Seattle Sounders forward are scheduled to join the team after the Peru match.
