The 33-year-old Feyenoord forward had a CAT and MRI scan on Friday, with results revealing a broken bone in his foot.

Makaay picked up the injury in the first group game - a goalless draw against Nigeria. Despite the problem, he came on as substitute in the 2-2 draw with the United States and started in the 1-0 win over Japan.

The former Bayern Munich forward will not return to Holland immediately. Instead he will attend the quarter-final clash with defending champions Argentina in Shanghai on Saturday.
