By Hunter York – Sebastian Giovinco made headlines when he signed with Major League Soccer in the summer. The former Juventus player’s move across the pond made him one of (if not the) highest paid Italian player anywhere in the world.
The move was also noteworthy as it was the first major signing of an overseas, designated player still in his prime. Giovinco is only 28-years-old, was on the Italy’s Serie A’s top team, Juventus, and is still eyeing a regular spot on the senior Italian national team.
The striker came carrying his Nike cleat bag and has knocked home 4 goals in 9 games for Toronto FC with the Swoosh paving the way. And it appears he may be working his magic to seal a better deal with the Portland based company.
Since joining MLS, Giovinco has turned out wearing blacked out versions of his latest cleat of choice, the Nike Tiempo. He has down some custom work on his Soar/Volt with the distinctive yellow studs at the back and Volt/Hyper Punch/Black with the recognizable fluorescent yellow sole plate.
It is hard to imagine that Giovinco does not want to stay in his Nike cleats. He has worn the Swoosh his entire career. He signed with Juventus’ youth academy in 1996 and got the call to the Italy Under-21 team in 2007. During these early years, Giovinco primarily relied on the Nike Tiempo in the classic black/white colorway. He stuck to this look while on loan with Empoli.
The ‘Old Lady’ loaned Giovinco to Parma from 2010-2012 and the player started out with the Tiempo but then made the transition to the Nike CTR360 Maestri silo
And then on to the Nike T90 silo.
Once back at Juventus for the 2012/13 Serie A campaign and with the T90 phased out, Giovinco tried out the new Nike Hypervenom.
The new silo did not fit the player’s needs and so he jumped back into his first love the Tiempo.
The dedicated Nike striker has been a huge hit here in the MLS and only time will tell if he sticks with the Swoosh and how far he can go in MLS.
A great selection of Nike Soccer Cleats are available at World Soccer Shop.
