After a 24-year wait, Germany added a 4th World Cup star to their federation badge with their 1-0 win over Argentina at the Maracana Stadium at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The updated look on the official jersey has been available in Europe for a couple of weeks but is just now hitting U.S. shores.
In addition to the new star, the West Germany jersey will include the official ‘FIFA World Champions 2014’ badge. This badge will be placed in the center of the chest on the home jersey and over the right chest on the away jersey.
The wait to add another winning star to the team badge was the longest in team history. The countries last World Cup title in 1990 was so long ago that the team and nation was still split into West Germany and East Germany. The 3 previous World Cup wins were all as West Germany.
Prior to winning in 1990, West Germany took the title on home soil in 1974. They won 20 years earlier in 1954 in the ‘Miracle at Bern’ to earn their first star.
Germany become on the third team to have 4 or more stars on their federation badge. Brazil leads the way with 5 World Cup stars with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Italy also has 4-stars with world titles in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006.
Argentina and Uruguay both have 2-stars while 3 teams, England, Spain, and France, have 1 star each.
