With some domestic leagues around the world drawing to a dramatic close with others just starting up, Soccer365 takes a close look at some of the best footwear selections on show.
Dwight Gayle (adidas F50 adiZero)
With two swings of his left foot and the Earth Pack adidas F50 adiZero, Dwight Gayle effectively dashed Liverpool’s title hopes. The striker subbed on for Crystal Palace at 3-0 down, but helped his side claw back to an incredible comeback draw in one of the best matches in recent memory.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Nike Mercurial Vapor IX)
Despite being rewarded with a limited edition bespoke pair of cleats, Cristiano Ronaldo switched into the 2010 Fast Forward edition of the Mercurial Vapor IX. The winger scored twice against Bayern Munich in his limited edition shoes and kept up the good scoring form in the Mach Purple/Orange colorway against Valencia. In fact, he scored one of the goals of the season to keep his club’s treble chances alive.
Salamon Rondon (Customized Nike Hypervenom Phantom)
The Nike Hypervenom has been drowned out in the past couple of weeks by the groundbreaking releases of the Magista and the Superfly IV. With that said, it is still one of the best cleats on the market. Zenit St. Petersburg’s Salamon Rondon showcased this with a pair of sleekly customized Hypervenoms.
Joe Hart (Umbro UX1)
While Liverpool crumbled in the face of adversity and pressure, Manchester City strengthened their grip on the English Premier League with a massive 3-2 victory over high-flying Everton. Joe Hart marshaled the backline and protected his goal fiercely, and in theme with the rest of this edition cleat spotting, made one of the saves of the season on Steven Naismith. Hart debuted the brand new Umbro UX1, which was ‘leaked’ by Umbro this past week.
Andy Carroll (Umbro UX1)
The other high profile player to give the UX1 a first run out was West Ham’s Andy Carroll. The striker has predominantly worn Specialis throughout his career, but will be hoping the new shoes will help earn him a spot on the plane to Rio this summer.
Enner Valencia (Nike Mercurial Vapor XV)
Pachuca’s Enner Valencia had one of the best footwear selections of the weekend as he laced up in a pair of limited edition Nike Mercurial Vapor XV cleats. The XVs were released in celebration of 15 Mercurial years and only 1,998 pairs were released worldwide.
Adnan Januzaj (Nike Mercurial Vapor IX)
Young Adnan Januzaj burst onto the scene and into superstardom this past season. One of the few bright lights of the David Moyes’ era, Januzaj has tailed off in the past couple of months. After opting to represent Belgium internationally, Januzaj will hope that a switch from his Hypervenoms in to the Mercurial Vapors will book him a spot on Marc Wilmots’ World Cup squad.
Fabinho Alves (Lionel Messi adidas F50 adiZero)
adidas gave Lionel Messi a special colorway of the F50 adiZero early on in 2014. Intended to grace the feet of Lionel Messi, Brazilian Fabinho Alves had no hesitations in wearing his Argentine counterpart’s bespoke shoes in Brasileirao Serie A action.
