Boumsong backs Lyon to take title
2008-05-09 12:21:00

Jean-Alain Boumsong is confident Lyon can claim their seventh successive Ligue 1 title and a win over Nancy on Saturday will move them closer.

Just a few weeks ago Lyon seemed certain to successfully defend their crown but an indifferent run of form has rendered just one win in five league games, which has undermined their title push.

Bordeaux's last-gasp winner at Marseille on the weekend blew the title race wide open again as they narrowed the gap to two points, but Boumsong insists his side will prove they are worthy champions, starting with the penultimate game of the season.

"It's up to us to play and do the job," he told the club's website. "If we do things right, we will be champions.

"We're well aware of the pressure that Bordeaux are putting on us but we must not get preoccupied by them.

"We'll have to fight right to the end, but we still have a two point lead. Our destiny is in our hands, or rather our feet.

"It's up to us to do what we have to in order to be champions. We can't just keep saying it.

"We have to work hard, stand together and stay united, and hope that providence is on our side.

"The mark of a great club is to be able to withstand the competition."

OL could conceivably win the title on Saturday but the players will be only too aware that defeat to third-placed Nancy could let Bordeaux leapfrog them into top spot going into the final game of the season.

Les Girondins face Sochaux on Saturday who need one point to mathematically ensure Ligue 1 safety if all the teams below them win.

Marseille will be casting a keen eye on the title race as defeat for Nancy, coupled with victory at Le Mans would propel them into third spot, leaving OM in pole position to claim the final Champions League place.

St Etienne still have an outside chance of claiming third place but need both Marseille and Le Mans to lose and to claim three points at relegation-threatened Paris St Germain to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Lens are level on points with PSG and only a place above them and out of the relegation zone thanks to a superior goal difference - bettering the Parisians' record by just one goal.

Depending on other results even victory at high-flying Lille on Saturday could see them head into the final match day in the drop zone.

Toulouse are also level on 39 points and the penultimate game pits them against seventh-placed Rennes.

Less likely to beat the drop are Strasbourg who need a miracle to keep them up.

Les Alsaciens have lost their past nine matches on the spin to leave them four points off Lens and with a vastly inferior goal difference.

They need three points against Caen to stand any chance of maintaining Ligue 1 football for next season.

Monaco and Auxerre are five points off the drop and victory for either in the principality will ensure safety but could set up a nervy final day for the other.

Elsewhere, already relegated Metz welcome Lorient, while Nice travel to Valenciennes.
