Bordeaux have been ordered to pay Elie Baup 2.5million euros in damages and interest following his dismissal as coach in 2003.
Baup, who is now coach of Toulouse, was fired by Les Girondins in October that year after the club made a poor start to their Ligue 1 campaign.
He was replaced as coach by Michel Pavon but was offered a position as general manager of the club.
Baup refused that post and took Bordeaux to court claiming they had wrongfully broken the terms of his contract.
An original tribunal could not reach a decision but the social chamber of the Court of Appeal has judged in favour of Baup.
Bordeaux are likely to launch an appeal.
