Le Guen confused by cup success
2008-05-07 13:56:00

Paul Le Guen admitted he cannot explain Paris St Germain's contrasting league and cup form after seeing them reach the Coupe de France final.

Substitute Yannick Boli's 78th-minute strike enabled PSG to see off the game threat of Ligue 2 outfit Amiens on Tuesday and progress to their second cup showpiece of the year with a 1-0 victory.

They have already won this season's Coupe de la Ligue, beating Lens 2-1 in the final at the end of March, but they are third from bottom in Ligue 1 and facing a fight to stay up with just two matches left.

Le Guen, whose side face a massive final two weeks of the season, said: "It is true that these successes in the cups, especially seeing how we are labouring so much in the championship, are quite irrational.

"But these things happen. What is important is that we keep our desire and determination, but also that we work hard to recover.

"We must be ready for the vital match on Saturday against St Etienne because our priority remains keeping ourselves in Ligue 1."

Le Guen put out a largely second-string team against Amiens, who are still not assured of staying up in Ligue 2.

And it was the hosts who applied most of the pressure, especially in the second half when PSG could not keep hold of the ball.

Boli's goal came against the run of play, the youngster exchanging passes with Peguy Luyindula before cutting inside a defender and lifting a neat shot over goalkeeper Benoit Benvegnu from 18 yards.

PSG goalkeeper Jerome Alonzo was forced to make two great saves late on to preserve his side's lead.

"We had a good first half-hour and then we struggled," added Le Guen.

"But we were able to score at a good time with a good team move.

"I am really pleased for Yannick Boli, whose season has been hit with injuries. He really has a lot of potential."

Amiens coach Ludovic Batelli said: "We are very disappointed for our supporters. We played well but to get through, we needed to play very well.

"We almost got to the final but we made errors, in our defending for the goal and also our lack of cutting edge in front of their goal."

PSG will meet either Lyon or Sedan in the final, which will be played at the Stade de France on May 24.
