Mr Wendel dreaming of title glory
2008-05-05 12:51:00

Bordeaux star Wendel foresees a "dream" end to the Ligue 1 season after helping his side close the gap on title rivals Lyon to just two points.

Les Girondins scored twice in the final 10 minutes - via Wendel's superb free-kick and Pierre Ducasse's last-gasp piledriver - to complete a remarkable 2-1 comeback win at Marseille on Sunday.

With Lyon only drawing 0-0 at Nice on Saturday, it has set up a nail-biting conclusion to a title race that has two weekends to run.

Wendel, whose goals over the past few months have been crucial in keeping Bordeaux on the coat-tails of Les Gones, is in bullish mood.

"The championship can be won now," said the Brazilian.

"It's going to be a dream end of this season for us. It promises to be amazing, and it is great for the supporters, journalists, the players and every Girondin.

"Perhaps we had the luck of champions here (at Marseille), we will see.

"We are still behind Lyon and we must give our all in the last two matches, especially since Nancy are going to give Lyon a hard game.

"I honestly think this title race will be close until the end."

Bordeaux bossed most of the match against OM, who went ahead against the run of play in first-half injury time when a goalkeeping gaffe by Ulrich Rame - who misjudged the bounce following Samir Nasri's lofted pass - allowed Mamadou Niang to tap into an empty net.

Les Girondins were completely dominant in the second half as Marseille fell to pieces, but had to wait until the 80th minute before Wendel struck.

Ducasse's screamer from 30 yards which arched into the top corner earned Bordeaux a deserved three points, and at the same time derailed Marseille's bid to claim a third-placed finish in Ligue 1.

They are now fourth, two points behind Nancy with two games left.

Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc said: "At half-time I told my players they were playing some great stuff but were being too timid.

"We had conceded a soft goal but we hadn't come here to lose. Marseille were likely to concede because they were sitting back.

"And we knew how to add some attacking impetus to our play in the second half.

"There are two matches left. It is a lot, but at the same time not much at all, if we are going to get back the points we are missing to claim the title."

OM coach Eric Gerets said of the defeat: "We just didn't play football in the second half.

"The first half was rather tactical. We were more dangerous and capable of providing chances for our two strikers.

"We wanted to contain them in the second half but we couldn't do it. We saw that they aren't in the running for the title for nothing.

"We couldn't keep the ball and we lost control of the match.

"But if we abandon hope for third place, it would be a scandal."
