Bordeaux put down a marker ahead of the defence of their Ligue 1 title by coming from behind to beat Marseille 2-1 in a pre-season friendly.
Left-back Taye Taiwo gave OM the lead in the match in Dax but after Lucho Gonzalez's own goal had restored parity, Yoann Gourcuff clipped home a penalty to give Les Girondins the win.
Both teams started with full-strength line-ups before making a plethora of substitutions in the second half, but new Marseille coach Didier Deschamps was impressed with his opponents.
He told his club's website: "The defeat came about especially because of the quality of the opposition.
"Bordeaux's team has changed very little (since last season). The only new player is Jaroslav Plasil, who is a quality player.
"We see that things come naturally for them, and they have good technical control. We have time ahead of us but the connections are not as good yet."
Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc, whose side play against Guingamp in the Trophee des Champions on Saturday night, refused to get excited about the result.
"The scoreline is obviously pleasing but it is not important," the former France defender told Marseille's official website.
"It's like that when we lose, when we draw or when we win.
"I am happy about the content. Everyone is on the same wavelength about keeping the ball, playing good football and creating chances."
