Lyon unhappy with Perrin speculation
2008-05-11 14:11:00

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas slammed the French media for their "false coverage" of the future of coach Alain Perrin.

Les Gones effectively need just a point at Auxerre next weekend to successfully defend their crown and win a seventh successive French title following Saturday's 1-0 home win over Nancy, which arrived courtesy of an Andre Luiz own goal.

Lyon have also made it through to the Coupe de France final and are therefore well on course to claim the first league-and-cup double in the club's history.

But Perrin's future at the champions is still up in the air, with the likes of Canal+ and French daily L'Equipe both saying he will be replaced over the summer after just one year in charge.

Aulas is unhappy at these rumours, and said: "What sort of journalism is it that announces things are going to happen that haven't even been confirmed?

"You haven't the right to say that. There will be decisions made at the end of the championship, like every year.

"You haven't the right to question the intentions of the Lyon board and myself.

"I have with me a coach who is succeeding in every competition we are in."

This season's title race has been closer than the others over the past six years, but it is hard to imagine Perrin being relieved of his duties if they do go on to win the league.

They are also heavy favourites to lift the cup, as they are playing struggling Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

Lyon are two points clear of second-placed Bordeaux in the table, and have a much better goal difference.

So just a point at Auxerre will be enough to claim another title and maintain their dominance at the head of French football.

They struggled to produce an end product against Nancy but eventually found the back of the net when Juninho's free-kick was bundled in by the unfortunate Luiz.

Les Gones had a host of opportunities throughout - and also had a Sidney Govou goal harshly disallowed for offside - but had to endure a nervous finale, especially as they knew Bordeaux were winning at home to Sochaux on Saturday.

"We showed a lot of qualities - a lot of desire and a lot of discipline," said Lyon goalkeeper Gregory Coupet.

"We have played well because Nancy, collectively, are a very strong team. To win 1-0 wasn't easy.

"We have shown a great desire to go and get that seventh title. At Auxerre, we must look to get the victory or at least claim a draw."

Despite the defeat, Nancy remain third, a point clear of Marseille in the race for third place and the final Champions League spot.

Coach Pablo Correa, whose team's final game is at home to UEFA Cup-chasing Rennes, said: "I am not too disappointed.

"Firstly because we have kept hold of third place and we have our Champions League destiny in our own hands.

"But equally because the squad is continuing to learn. This year, we are reaching a high level.

"It wasn't good enough against Lyon and we lacked a bit of experience here. But whatever happens in the end, Nancy's season has been satisfying."
