FC St. Pauli announced on Thursday, July 23 that they were partnering with Under Armour and that they will take over as their technical sponsor starting in July 2016.  The Baltimore based company, who recently opened a Munich office, will provide the club with official team jerseys and training gear for the youth through senior teams.

“With Under Armour we have been able to partner with a strong and rapidly growing brand. We are proud and excited about the fact that the partnership will go way beyond a typical kit-supplier sponsorship. The FC St. Pauli and Under Armour both like to do things differently than the competition and challenge the way things are. Together we will be able drive success on the pitch and in our communities through passion and innovation,” FC St. Pauli President Oke Goettlich said at the event.

The Hamburg based club has spent most of their history competing in the Bundesliga 2.  They have earned promotion to the Bundesliga twice in the last 15 years (2001/02 and 2010/11) with both campaigns ending in relegation.

They have a fanatical fan base and developed into a ‘cult’ club in the 1980’s, however.  The Skull and Crossbones have become the unofficial emblem for the club and they have been given the nicknames ‘Freibeuter der Liga (Buccaneers of the League)’ as well as their home stadium, the Millerntor Stadion, being called ‘das Freudenhaus der Liga’ (Brothel of the League, literally House of Joy).’

U.S. men’s national team fans are familiar with the club as former U.S. international Cory Gibbs played for them from 2001-2003.  The Brown graduate played 60 matches and scored 4 goals for the club.

Under Armour is also the official technical sponsor for Tottenham Hotspur, São Paulo, Colo-Colo, Cruz Azul and Toluca.
