Mancini Calls For Calm
2008-05-12 03:32:22

Internazionale coach Roberto Mancini insists that he and his players are not coming apart at the seams as the season draws to a close.

For the second straight weekend, Inter had a chance to clinch the Scudetto with a victory but instead drew 2-2 with Siena, while Roma won their game against Atalanta to close the gap to just one point with one round remaining.

Mancini was visibly upset on the touchline after Inter were awarded a penalty but defender Marco Materazzi decided to take the spot-kick instead of Julio Cruz, one of the preferred choices of Mancini.

Materazzi's attempt was saved by goalkeeper Alex Manninger and Siena held on for a draw.

After having some time to cool off, Mancini said: "I was angry because at 2-2 there was no longer any logic.

"We were always ahead and there was so much willingness to win the title. We have many spot-kick takers such as Julio (Cruz), Mario (Balotelli) and Marco (Materazzi). You can miss a penalty."

Inter fans that had packed the San Siro hoping for their team to claim their third successive title, were fuming after the game.

Mancini could not hide his disappointment but believes Inter will bounce back next weekend.

"We cannot be too hard on ourselves," he said.

"Today it was a game where we could have won the title but this is football. We have 90 minutes left to play and this disappointment will pass."

Inter travel to Parma on Sunday while Roma conclude the campaign at relegation-threatened Catania.

"We had the chances to win today but now we must go to Parma and win," said Mancini.

"Neither our game at Parma nor Roma's clash at Catania will be easy, but we have no fear."

Inter not only have a one-point lead but hold the better head-to-head with respect to the Giallorossi which would be crucial should both teams finish on 82 points.
