Low: Lehmann Still Number One
2008-03-31 21:21:29

Germany coach Joachim Low has indicated Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann remains the front-runner to claim the number one jersey at Euro 2008.

Speaking to kicker magazine on Monday, Low had nothing but praise for Lehmann, who has seen his place in the Germany set-up come under threat since losing his starting berth at the Gunners to Manuel Almunia earlier this season.

The 38-year-old was nevertheless given the nod to claim his 53rd international cap in last week's 4-0 win over Switzerland, and Low was happy with the veteran's display despite his recent lack of first-team action.

"He still showed an extreme level of calmness, maintained his concentration and directed the defence," said Low.

"He has a good physical condition, is quick and confident - but nobody has a guaranteed berth."

Both Low and goalkeeping coach Andreas Kopke will monitor five custodians in the coming months, with Rene Adler and Manuel Neuer vying with the experienced trio of Robert Enke, Timo Hildebrand and Lehmann for three squad places for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

The Germany boss has also confirmed he will pick five strikers for the European Championships, with Bayer Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling tipped to claim a berth.

"He can also play on the wing at Leverkusen and he has proven himself," Low said of the 24-year-old forward.

"I am happy that all my strikers are efficient at the moment."

Mario Gomez, Kevin Kuranyi, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski are the favourites to claim the other places in Low's forward line.

Meanwhile, Schalke defender Heiko Westermann has boosted his chances of earning a call-up after a strong showing in Basle last week, and his versatility - Westermann has played across the whole of Schalke's backline this season - further strengthens his claim.

"It is important to have one or two players who can play in many positions," said Low.

"Westermann can play at left or right full-back as well as in the middle."

Low must reveal his Euro 2008 squad in mid-May before a training camp in Majorca that will serve as a warm-up to pre-tournament friendlies against Belarus and Serbia.
