Spain coach Luis Aragones has urged his side to keep their feet firmly on the ground after they beat world champions Italy on Wednesday.
David Villa's stunning second-half volley gave Spain a 1-0 win in the warm-up for Euro 2008, extending their unbeaten run to 14 games.
Although Spain have not tasted defeat since 2006, Aragones prefers to remain cautious.
"I would like to avoid euphoria because we have only won in friendlies," said Aragones.
"But we have sent out a warning to our future rivals that Spain are beating important sides."
Aragones' men go into this summer's tournament looking to rid themselves of a reputation for underachieving at recent major tournaments.
Spain were eliminated from Euro 2004 in the first round and were knocked out by France in the second round of the 2006 World Cup.
"In my opinion, we still have a long way to go," said Aragones. "But we have to continue on this path otherwise we will achieve nothing.
"We do have to focus on our strength, which is to control possession and bore our rivals. We lack the speed that certain teams have and we don't have the great physical condition that other national teams have."
Spain will have two further warm-up games against Peru and the United States before their Euro 2008 campaign begins against Russia.
Much of Spain's ambitions will rely on the performance of players currently playing in the English Premier League such as Liverpool trio Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa as well as Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
Fabregas, who played in Wednesday's encounter, is well aware he has to step up his game if the national team are to clinch their first title since winning their only major silverware - the European Championships in 1964.
"I always try to give everything, whether I play for club or country," he said. "I know that I'm not playing at my best level for the national team, that I can still give something more.
"I have to adapt to the players, to the team and to my role in this team which is different to that of my role at Arsenal.
"I have no excuse, I just need to keep on working in order to give my best for Spain."
Fabregas highlighted the importance of Wednesday's triumph for the team's morale.
"You don't beat world champions Italy every day," said Fabregas. "This is an important win for us despite being a friendly.
"Little by little we are feeling more united as a team and getting the confidence boost we need.
"We know we have two games left before Euro 2008 and we want to do well in those games in order to reach the tournament in Austria and Switzerland in full confidence."
