FA Community Shield - Preview
2008-08-09 10:40:00

Manchester United and Portsmouth will contest for the first piece of silverware of the new season when the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners clash at Wembley in the FA Community Shield on Sunday.

Manchester United and Portsmouth will contest for the first piece of silverware of the new season when the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners clash at Wembley in the FA Community Shield on Sunday.

The Red Devils blew away most opposition in the last campaign, eventually lifting the league trophy following a tense neck-and-neck finish with Chelsea.

Portsmouth meanwhile overcame Championship side Cardiff in the FA Cup final to book their place in this season's curtain-raiser, and Harry Redknapp's men should take to the field in a confident mood having beaten United in the quarter-finals of the same competition.

United will be without key attacking duo Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo due to injury, while Owen Hargreaves and Ben Foster are also sidelined.

Pompey may be without Lassana Diarra after the influential midfielder was subjected to a wild challenge in a friendly at Oxford United and is behind on his pre-season work.

FA Cup final matchwinner Kanu is also a major doubt although Linvoy Primus is in contention after knee problems.
