Bolton had a dire end to their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 defeat against AEK Athens, which included a red card for defender Gary Cahill.

Wanderers' goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen saved a penalty from Brazilian veteran Rivaldo after 11 minutes before Finnish international Perparim Hetemaj put the hosts ahead just six minutes later.

Cahill received his marching orders minutes later for a trip on Juanfran which looked more like a yellow card offense.

Andy O'Brien almost earned Bolton a draw with the last touch of the match but his glancing header was a couple of yards past the far post from Blerim Dzemaili's corner.

The game ended 1-0, giving manager Gary Megson plenty to work on with just a week before the much anticipated start to the Premier League season.
