FA Respond To Mido Criticism
2008-12-05 08:39:00

The Football Association has responded to Middlesbrough striker Mido's criticism and vowed to take action against racist chants.

The Egyptian international was allegedly subjected to Islamophobic jibes from Newcastle fans during the Tees-Tyne derby at The Riverside last weekend.

Last year's fixture saw Mido endure the same treatment from Magpies fans, and the 25-year-old on Wednesday slammed the FA for allowing a repeat by failing to act in the 2007-08 season.

But the FA have responded to the former Tottenham player, insisting it is tackling racism head-on.

"We condemn any racist or Islamophobic behaviour and are committed to working with our clubs and the police to stamp it out," said a spokesman for the FA.

"We have an on-going investigation into the incidents on Saturday and are awaiting reports from Middlesbrough and Newcastle.

"As always, the priority is to identify the individuals involved and take the strongest possible action against them.

"We fully support banning orders for anyone convicted of racist chanting."
