With just four weeks to go before the new transfer window opens, Martinez believes he requires another two or three players to see Latics through to the end of the season.

Martinez feels the current squad needs strengthening, notably in attack after losing the services of Marlon King.

King was sacked by chairman Dave Whelan after receiving an 18-month jail sentence after being found guilty of sexually assaulting and causing actual bodily harm to a 20-year-old female student.

Although Scott Sinclair is on loan from Chelsea, it leaves Martinez with just Jason Scotland and Hugo Rodallega as his primary striking options.

"We lost one player (King) we didn't expect to lose and we sent out a player on loan as well (Ben Watson to QPR)," Martinez said.

"We're a little light in numbers and we need to bring in two or three players in the transfer window to give us the right balance to go into the second half of the campaign with full confidence.

"But we must have players with the right character, who are at the right moment in their careers, who can bring something different to what we already have.

"Importantly, with my focus on the players we have in the squad, the players coming in have to help them.

"So we need to work hard to bring in these kind of players, but not just bring in numbers for the sake of it.

"I will never sign a player because it's the window and it's open, that's not the way I work."

Perhaps referring to King, who Whelan regretted signing as he felt the 29-year-old's heart and soul was not in the game, Martinez insisted personality is as crucial as ability.

"It's very easy to find the right player or someone who has the ability you need, but to find out about their personality, their character, takes a little longer," added Martinez.

"We need to make sure we discover that aspect because, as important as bringing in the right players is bringing in the right human beings."

In terms of funds at his disposal, Wigan are at least in a position of strength as Martinez does not have to sell to buy.

Antonio Valencia's £16million move to Manchester United at the end of June also means there is cash in the kitty.

"We've got a few options and we'll look to see if they are right ones," Martinez said.

"As soon as you finish one transfer you are working towards the next one, so you need to be creative and plan in that way, and that's what we are going to do here.

"As for money, it will depend a little on how the next six games go.

"Given our situation here we don't have to sell anyone to balance the books or are forced to sell, and that's probably our biggest strength.

"We lost a couple of players who are now off the wage bill, so we have a little bit of room to manoeuvre there. We will work as hard as we can."
