Avram Grant will go cap in hand to Portsmouth's hierarchy in the next few days to see how much money he can prise out of them for January.
Grant was named Pompey boss last week after the decision was made to part company with Paul Hart.
The south coast remain bottom of the league after losing 4-1 to Manchester United in Grant's first game at the helm and the Israeli will now talk to he club's owners to finalise his plans for January.
"We are to have discussions and in the next couple of days and I will know what we can do in January," he said.
"We have a good squad, but there are positions where we could make it stronger and I think we will do it."
Although Wayne Rooney's hat-trick ensured Pompey finished pointless, Grant was pleased with his team's character against the champions.
"The spirit of the team was very good," he added.
"We believe we can survive. It will not be easy. It will be a long, long battle. But it is possible."
