Keegan appeared to be pulling the North East club in the right direction but it has now emerged that he left following a meeting with the clubs hierarchy earlier on Tuesday.
The 57-year-old recently claimed James Milner would not be sold only for the midfielder to join Aston Villa. The club was unable to sign any big name players thereafter which may have fueled his decision.
Newcastle's Director of Football Dennis Wise is odds on to take over the role.
