Former England footballer and successful racehorse trainer Mick Channon has been injured in a motorway accident on the M1 on Wednesday evening.
The 59-year-old was travelling to his West Ilsley stables in Berkshire from Doncaster Sales when the accident happened. He was accompanied by his 14-year-old son, Jack, who was not seriously hurt.
Channon is believed to have suffered a broken arm and a punctured lung, with his condition being described as "stable".
A spokeswoman from his stables said: "He will be fine. It's not life-threatening or anything like that but he does have some broken bones and he's stable.
"The crash was on the M1 around the Leicester-Nottingham area and while it was a bad crash, in the grand scheme of things it's very mendable."
Channon made more than 650 appearances in his football career spanning three decades, for Manchester City, Norwich City, Portsmouth and Southampton, where he still remains the Saints' all-time leading goalscorer.
He began his horseracing career as an assistant trainer after retiring from football in 1986, before taking out his own licence in 1990.
He is one of very few sportspeople who have reached the top in two different sports.
