Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson has expressed his hunger for a regular place in the starting line-up, but hinted at a possible exit by saying he 'can't wait forever' for first team football.
The England Under21 international, who emerged through the academy at the Riverside, had links with loan moves away from the club all summer with Glasgow Rangers and Watford among the possible destinations.
But Gareth Southgate is desperate to keep hold of such a talented player, admitting it is tough to give him regular starts with Stewart Downing already the first-choice left winger at the club.
Johnson said: "It is very frustrating sat on the bench week in, week out watching games.
"I am 21 now and I need to be doing something. I want to play.
"It's no secret. The manager knows that and we've had a few chats in pre-season about my position and a lot of things have been mentioned like transfers and loans.
"I want to be a Boro player, there's no doubt about that. I think we are on the verge of big things here.
"The manager has said it is a long season and that there will be injuries and suspensions and that I will get my chance and should be patient and I can see that is right.
"We have a small squad and hopefully I am next in line to get a chance but I can't wait forever."
