Portsmouth captain Sol Campbell believes Harry Redknapp's team have improved over last season despite a poor start to the current campaign.
Pompey lie bottom of the Premier League after failing to score a goal in their two games so far.
But Campbell believes the FA Cup winners have what it takes to stage another impressive campaign.
After losing on penalties to Manchester United in the FA Community Shield match, they were beaten 4-0 at Chelsea before losing 1-0 at home to United on Monday.
But Campbell still insists the Pompey fans have no cause to doubt their favourites.
Pompey have now set a club record six league defeats in a row - following four at the end of last term - but Campbell said of the home clash with United: "It was good on the night. We played really well, a vast improvement from the other weekend.
"It's been a tough start, when you think about it, I don't think any team has had (to consecutively face) two top teams going for the title. It's definitely a tough start.
"But the performance was better big time compared to Chelsea and it's nice to know. You could see the reaction, the lads care.
"We want to do well and move Portsmouth up where it should be and we'll do it. We will dig in and if we play like how we played against United, with the energy and everybody fighting for each other, we'll move up.
"I think we proved a few things to people, people who doubted us. We want to play, we want to do well.
"We've got European football as well so we've got to get up to speed.
"At the moment, everyone's working hard and everyone's doing a little bit extra in training and that's good.
"We all want to do well and we will keep on going and doing the right things to get us there."
A scruffy, deflected goal off a barely intentional shot by United's Darren Fletcher beat Pompey but they usually win or draw against United at Fratton Park and this was by no means Sir Alex Ferguson's best team - minus the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, Owen Hargreaves, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick.
Yet manager Redknapp, inhibited in the transfer market by the impact of the credit crunch at Fratton Park where he has had to offload midfielders Pedro Mendes and Sulley Muntari for £14million to help balance the books, agrees with his veteran captain.
He said: "We've been a good team for two years and we'll be a decent team again this season.
"Nobody expected us to get points off Chelsea or United who I'm sure will again slug out the title race and probably the Champions League final as well.
"We did really well against them even though I was scared by doubts over about four of my players who have not been able to do full fitness work."
Redknapp had midfielder Sean Davis just back from a hip injury, on-loan debut maker Armand Traore, 18, still recovering from a knock picked up at Arsenal, Younes Kaboul having missed pre-season at Tottenham while weighing up a move to Pompey, and Niko Kranjcar out with an ankle injury.
But Redknapp has also had his tactics questioned after criticising England under new coach Fabio Capello last week.
Against United on Monday he played with three centre-backs in defence and Traore and the 6ft 5in Papa Bouba Diop as wingers.
He also claimed striker Peter Crouch could "help us a bit by winning more headers" even though admitting the tall, former Liverpool man was not yet getting the right service from his team-mates.
Redknapp needs a result at Everton on Saturday to quieten an unjustified measure of discontent and admitted: "It's another tough game but don't worry we will be up there again this year ... I've still got a good squad."
Redknapp claimed popular, injury-plagued defender Linvoy Primus' loan to Charlton would not be for the remainder of his new one-year Pompey contract and he would be back at Fratton Park at "around Christmas time".
