Wigan's final pre-season friendly saw the Latics fall to a late penalty as they drew 2-2 win over Bundesliga outfit Hannover 96 at the AWD Arena on Friday night.
Steve Bruce's men wasted no time in putting themselves ahead as Emile Heskey (17) broke through the opposition defence before controlling Montrose's cross, and the England international flicked the ball up and over the goalkeeper to open the scoring.
But the lead lasted just two minutes as Mike Hanke (19) found himself in the right place to follow up after a previous effort had cannoned off the cross-bar.
The game looked to be heading towards a draw after both sides failed to take their chances in the second-half, but the final ten minutes saw Paul Scharner (83) turn from hero to villain as he put the Latics ahead with seven minutes to go only to foul inside the box, and Bruce's former Birmingham player Mikael Forssell (90) stepped up to slot home the resulting penalty.
