While the Latics boss was delighted to see England defeat Germany in Berlin, he believes residential camps could be more workable during a traditionally busy domestic period.

He said: "Of course international football has to be played as we all want to be part of it.

"My big question is: 'Do you need to have a friendly at this time of the season?'

"Are the vast amount of people interested in a friendly? That's the debate.

"If the powers that be get together, they could say, 'let's take the players away for three or four days.

"They could work on systems and how they are going to play. I think most managers, would say, 'okay, that is not a problem'."

Bruce is grateful his side are not playing until Monday when they entertain Everton.

"I am thankful for that, " he said. "If we were not playing then I would have a huge problem.

"I have got South Americans and people say well you knew that when you signed them. But we have no choice.

"We have got to spread our net afar because these type of players are cheaper.

"You just hope none of them come back injured and we have suffered in the past, particularly with Amr Zaki.

"It is part and parcel of the game and we are mindful of the fact they are representing their countries. But we do get frustrated as we are paying their wages."

Zaki (rib and calf), Emile Heskey (hamstring), Mario Melchiot (knee) and Jason Koumas (groin) are rated 50-50 to face Everton, with Bruce adding: "It is highly unlikely I will be able to play all four of them."

Emmerson Boyce is sidelined through suspension after being sent off in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle last weekend.
