Torres' last appearance for Spain ended in misery when he limped off injured early on during last month's World Cup qualifier against Belgium. But it was a happy return for the Liverpool hitman after appearing as a second-half substitute against Chile.

His 67th-minute effort was his first goal for Spain since striking the winner during the Euro 2008 final against Germany, and there was further joy to come for the 24-year-old as he ended up as captain with the likes of Iker Casillas, Carles Puyol and Xavi off the pitch.

"I've returned to scoring after that goal in the final and I'm very happy," said Torres after netting his 18th international goal.

"As well as that, it has been an honour to have served as captain for the second time with Spain. This means that although I'm still very young, I've already been involved here for a long time."

Torres, who became the second-youngest player to captain Spain when he first took the armband at the age of 21, added: "It's a nice time for the Spain team because the team are playing very well and winning, and you need to enjoy it while it lasts. It makes you proud to play in this team.

"We have ended the year very happy with what we have achieved."

It was also a special night for Santi Cazorla, who notched his first goal for Spain when his late shot from the edge of the area deflected into the corner of the net.

Cazorla, who was playing in his home ground at Villarreal's El Madrigal stadium, said: "It's my first goal with Spain and as well as that I've achieved it at Villarreal, at my team's ground.

"The national team continues with its playing philosophy - touch and pass. We continue to play very well and I hope the good run doesn't end," added Cazorla, whose side are now 28 matches unbeaten, 25 of which have been wins.
