Tigers' Brown not scared of anyone
2008-11-17 18:26:00

Phil Brown watched Hull tame another Premier League big gun, then promised footballing pedigree is no guarantee of success against his side.

Hull have compiled an impressive list of victims in their maiden season in the top flight, including memorable away victories over Arsenal and Tottenham.

Manchester City, lagging behind their less illustrious opponents in the table but boasting £32.5million forward Robinho and lofty ambitions to match, came away from the KC Stadium with a 2-2 draw.

Both sides gained and lost the lead, with defensive blunders from Tal Ben Haim and Kamil Zayatte gifting goals to Daniel Cousin and Stephen Ireland, before the latter curled home a superb second and Geovanni earned the hosts a draw with his deflected free-kick.

In stark contrast to Robinho's British transfer record fee, Hull's Brazilian arrived on a free transfer from Eastlands, but Brown believes his players should not fear big names.

"They've got a lot of quality, but so have we," he said.

"So I'm not going to accept defeat against better quality. The game plan and the basics of this football club need to remain intact for 90 or 95 minutes, however long the game lasts.

"If it does, then we will get something from these games.

"You're pleased with points in this league however you get them. Bolton left here last week with three points and didn't deserve them. Whether we deserved three points or Manchester City deserved three points doesn't matter.

"I think we're both probably pleased with a point, coming off the back of three straight defeats."

Brown was also pleased to provide the club's loyal supporters an exciting second-half comeback, having surrendered the lead to enter the break a goal down.

"It would bring the crowds back for sure, but you can't say that when it's the KC and its a 25,000 sell-out every week," he said.

"I think half the reason they come back is to see the opposition, and there's some real quality in the opposition, and other times they come to see a sterling performance from the home side. I think they saw one here.

"I was disappointed at half-time. I called for a rallying charge, or whatever you want to call it, and I think we got it.

"The players came out of the traps in the second half. I was going to make early substitutions if we didn't get it right but I didn't need to.

"I'm quite proud of our second-half performance."

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes praised Robinho, having handed the former Real Madrid man the captain's armband in the absence of suspended skipper Richard Dunne.

Dunne was red-carded in the defeat to Spurs last week, and Hughes rewarded the 24-year-old Brazil star for a mature display in that match.

"It was decided on the basis of his performance last week in trying circumstances.

"We were down to 10 men and he led from the front. He's always brave in possession, he demands the ball in key areas of the pitch and he's always an 'out' for us.

"Last week I thought he showed real determination and real leadership and I thought this week was an opportunity to show it again and he did.

"He's a fantastic talent, everyone can see that, and since he has been at the club he has showed other elements of his game and his personality.

"I recognised that against Spurs and it was something I thought it needed to be recognised again here."
