United Aim For Top Spot
2009-01-12 19:16:00

Wayne Rooney says Manchester United are hungrily eyeing top spot following their 3-0 drubbing of Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The emphatic victory saw the Red Devils shave the gap on current leaders Liverpool to five points.

United now have the opportunity to usurp the Reds, as they play twice against Wigan and Bolton before the Merseysiders play their next game against local rivals Everton.

Rooney admits they are determined to reach the league summit, no matter how short-lived that tenure may be.

"That might only last until Liverpool play Everton on the Monday, but on Saturday night we want to look at the table and see ourselves at the top," Rooney told MUTV.

"Today's (Sunday) win against Chelsea was very important. After watching Liverpool (1-1 draw with Stoke), we needed to take advantage and get the win.

"We've done that now so come Saturday, if we do our job right and win our two games, then we'll be top."
