England’s John Terry headed home an 86th minute off a set piece to give the visitors a 2-1 win over Germany at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on Wednesday. Fabio Capello’s side looked the better side for much of the match even without many of their first choice players and earned the well deserved win.
The visitor took a first half lead off a Matthew Upson’s goal in the 24th minute. The central defender poked in a loose ball from 6 yards out after German keeper Rene Adler’s misjudged a cross from the right flank.
Gabriel Agbonlahor and Jermain Defoe were paired up front and caused the German defense problems throughout the match. In the second half, Darren Bent replaced Defoe and missed a golden opportunity to double the lead when he slipped after beating Germany substitute keeper Tim Wiese only to lose his footing and miss the mark.
Germany equalized in the 63rd minute off a glaring error from the England defense. A miscommunication between Terry and second half substitute goalkeeper Scott Carson allowed German substitute Patrick Helmes to reach the long ball and knock the ball between Carson’s legs.
Shaun Wright-Phillips came close to playing the hero 11 minutes from time when his shot knocked off the post setting up Terry winner a few minutes later.
