Capello To Drop Gerrard?
2008-10-13 14:33:45

Fabio Capello is reportedly considering dropping Steven Gerrard after a sub-par performance in England's 5-1 win over Kazakhstan.

Fabio Capello is reportedly considering dropping Steven Gerrard after a sub-par performance in England's 5-1 win over Kazakhstan.

The Independent reports that Capello was impressed with Frank Lampard's display on Saturday, while Gareth Barry is regarded as one of his key performers, despite being removed at half-time.

However, the paper claims Barry has 'Capello's faith' for the trip to Belarus on Wednesday, and his selection would provide some balance to England's midfield in Minsk.

It's thought that Gerrard is not alone, with 'five or six' players disappointing Capello, despite the 5-1 scoreline.

Wayne Rooney isn't likely to be among those under pressure from Capello. The Italian described the Manchester United forward, who scored twice on Saturday, as 'extraordinary'.

Meanwhile, John Terry is still a major doubt for the Belarus match.

The Chelsea and England captain missed the Kazakhstan game with a back injury, and The Guardian claims that he will have to prove his fitness in Monday's training session in order to make the trip.

If Terry does miss out, Capello must decide whether to stick with Matthew Upson - who at times appeared nervous and uncertain on Saturday - or bring in Joleon Lescott to partner stand-in captain Rio Ferdinand.
