Cuba has been somewhat isolated from the rest of the world due to the 5-decade old trade embargo with the United States but it has not kept fans from the island nation from being culturally rich with the colors of their favorite soccer teams from around the globe.
World Soccer Shop had the rare opportunity to travel with the New York Cosmos to Cuba for their friendly with the national team earlier this month and it was immediately obvious that fans of the beautiful game love showing off the colors of their favorite teams.
It was no surprise that we found an outpouring of love for Raul…and it has no bearing on that being Cuba’s President’s name, Raul Castro. The fans were showing their love for Raul Gonzalez. The Real Madrid legend currently plays with the Cosmos and was on tour with the side.
After playing 550 games and scoring 228 goals for Real, Raul moved to Schalke 04. And the fans in Cuba were well aware of the moves and colors that we pulled on after the move to the Bundesliga side.
The love for Real Madrid was not just about Raul, however. The jersey of Los Merengues was the most popular in Cuba. And the home jersey, away jersey, and third jersey were on display with a variety of player names as well as Real Mardid scarves on hand despite the temperatures.
La Liga rival and current UEFA Champions League champion Barcelona was well represented. Lionel Messi is the team’s most lethal player but the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Neymar Jr, as well as team legend Ronaldinho were all spotted.
But it was not just Real and Barca or even just La Liga. Teams were represented from all around Europe and the Americas.
And it was not all about the club game. The Cuban national team jersey was in the house but also jerseys from Brazil, the new 4-star Germany jersey, and more…
The best jersey of the lot had to go to the fan with the San Antonio Scorpions jersey.
What jersey did you think was the best for the match?
