Real Madrid has a problem of epic proportions on their hands. The club’s talismanic striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been exposed as the 2nd most expensive player in history behind his teammate, that other guy, Gareth Bale.

Football Leaks exposed the cover-up between Bale’s last club, Tottenham, and Real Madrid following the 2013 transfer. Bale’s transfer fee was publicly stated as €91.59 million (Ronaldo’s fee eclipsed €96 million) but the leaked documents show in total Tottenham were paid €100,759,418 for the Welsh winger.
The transfer deal also included stipulation that Tottenham not reveal the true amount of the transfer.
Why this really matters is hard to figure out with Ronaldo the focus of the team, the winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2013 and 2014 as well as second place finisher in most recent 3 seasons when he did not win the award, selling more customized jerseys, and most high-profile player making underwear commercials and becoming as much a fashion icon as soccer star.
But at the end of the day it does matter to the 30-year-old with reports hinting that some of the strains on the club are due to Ronaldo’s displeasure at being 2nd best. And it could cost them as both Ronaldo and Bale have been linked to possible moves during the summer.
Do you feel bad for Ronaldo? It’s not like Bale is playing keepie-uppies with a Victoria Secret model.
