The Costa Rica Football Association announced that New Balance will replace Lotto as the team’s technical sponsor. The deal will see New Balance provide the men’s and women’s national teams along with the youth, beach soccer, and futsal team kits and training apparel.
The Ticos had one of the most sought after jerseys during the 2014 FIFA World Cup with their march to the quarterfinals. The run has pushed the team up to 13th in the FIFA World Rankings.
The women’s team have qualified for their first Women’s World Cup this summer in Canada and will no doubt continue the trend for the team’s jersey to be very popular among fans. The Lady Ticos qualified as the runners-up in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship. This summer they are in Group E along with Brazil, South Korea, and Spain.
“Costa Rica has a proud footballing tradition with big aspirations for the future; much like New Balance Football,” Eduardo Li, President, Costa Rican Football Federation said of the new deal. “This sponsorship will give our squads of talented players the best kit and equipment available to ensure we keep competing at the highest levels.”

Costa Rican defender Kendall Watson signed earlier this year with the brand. He joins the list of other high profile players – Aaron Ramsey, Alvaro Negredo, Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj, Samir Nasri, Vincent Kompany – wearing the brand.
Prior to the announcement, Lotto had been the technical sponsor for Costa Rica since 1990. New Balance was forced to pay a buyout since Lotto held the contract through the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Lotto has come under fire recently from the federation for the quality of the jerseys and apparel they were providing to the team.
New Balance is committed to providing an improved design, an increase in income to the federation, and more prestige to the national teams.
“I think those three points (are) wins. We are grateful to Lotto because at the time supported us but I think the company level is very different. New Balance is one of the top brands in the US and is now being presented globally,” Li told La Nacion.
