On Wednesday, Club América claimed the CONCACAF crown with a comprehensive 4-2 victory over the Montreal Impact in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, 5-3 on aggregate. The big win in the second leg of this 2014-15 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League final displayed the free-flowing and relentless attack that Las Aguilas displayed this tournament. Both Oribe Perlata and Dario Benedetto would each finish with seven goals tallied for the tournament. Benedetto would register a hat trick in this final leg alone and would finish with the Golden Ball as the best player of the competition. Uruguayan manager Gustavo Matosas ensured one of Mexico’s most prestigious clubs would be on top of the region once more, in dominant record-breaking fashion. Club América will join OFC champions Auckland City FC at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan this December.

This Club América side showed their attacking strength early. In the group stage, the Mexican side would score nineteen goals. Ten of these goals would come in a record-breaking 10-1 beating of Puerto Rico Bayamon FC in Puerto Rico. Bright Future award winner Martin Zuniga would record a hat-trick, as five different scorers including Zuniga would score in the rout. Only three goals were scored against América in that stage, with the Puerto Ricans claiming two of those goals.

After dispatching perennial Costa Rican power Deportivo Saprissa in the quarterfinal round 5-0 on aggregate, Las Aguilas would show their heart along with their ruthless attack in the semifinal round against another top Costa Rican club. CS Herediano would defeat América 3-0 in the first leg at Costa Rica. But, things changed when Benedetto alone would score four goals in the first half of a decisive 6-0 win in the Estadio Azteca in the second leg. The Argentine striker’s first-half flurry is also a CONCACAF Champions League record for most goals scored in a single game.

This is América’s sixth CONCACAF title, first under the current Champions League format. For supporters of this club, this team’s particular efforts will be fondly remembered for how their attack soared to another level. They will prove their worth to the world’s best clubs in about eight months’ time.
