Watford defender Jay DeMerit has called for Danny Shittu to stay at Vicarage Road and help the Hornets through another Championship season.

Manager Adrian Boothroyd has been told he must sell before he can add to his squad and after failing to agree terms with Rangers earlier this month, Shittu is favourite to be first out of the door.

But DeMerit - who partnered Shittu at the heart of defence for the majority of last season - is desperate for the Nigeria international to commit his future to the club.

He told Sky Sports News: "His situation is personal to him but he is in the group at the minute and he is still included.

"What is important to us is that he does feel wanted.

"Hopefully he will stay because he is a fantastic player and we will need him."
