Summer signing Dimitar Berbatov silenced his critics with a brace in Manchester United's 3-0 Champions League win against Aalborg at the Energi-Nord Arena.

Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson sprang a major selection surprise by handing 18-year-old Brazilian Rafael Da Silva his European debut.

United opened the scoring after 22 minutes following a stunning through pass from substitute Ryan Giggs - on for injured Paul Scholes - which set-up Wayne Rooney on the edge of the box. The England hitman looks to be regaining his form of late and stroked the ball past Moroccan goalkeeper Karim Zaza.

Rooney could have made it 2-0 one the verge of half-time, but his chipped shot was expertly blocked by Zaza.

The visitors continued to boss the game after the break and went 2-0 up from a thunderous volley from Berbatov after a goalkeeping blunder - for the Bulgarian striker's first United goal.

The former Spurs forward claimed his second with an acrobatic volley in the box - from an electric run down the wing from Cristiano Ronaldo to wrap up a sublime second-half for United to go top of Group E.
