Wayne Rooney believes last season's FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Portsmouth spurred Manchester United to go on to clinch the double.
United were already embroiled in a tense Premier League title battle while their Champions League campaign was also well on its way to being won when they faced Pompey at Old Trafford.
But Harry Redknapp's men took the game by the scruff and a loan goal from Nwanku Kanu gave Pompey the victory, from where they went on to lift the trophy.
"After that game, the dressing room was a horrible place to be. No words were said and club-wise it's the worst I've ever been in," Rooney said.
"We realised that, with the other teams who were left in the competition, we would have had a great chance to win the FA Cup. It was really disappointing.
"The important thing was to keep that feeling at the back of your mind and make sure we went on to win the Premier League and Champions League."
Despite United's spectacular end to the season, which saw them overcome Chelsea in the Champions League final on penalties, England striker Rooney insists the team can still improve.
Rooney added: "Winning the double was a great achievement - but we're not satisfied with that.
"It's something we all spoke about when we came back in pre-season - we want more trophies. We don't want to be known as a team which won the double and that was it. We want to make history.
"In five or six years I hope people are saying what a great team we became."
