With plenty of time to look forward to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 knockout phase matches before matches kick-off in February, UEFA.com took a moment to look back on top players from the Group Stage.
UEFA Champions League team of the group stage
GK: Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint Germain) – Played in all 6 matches and kept 5 clean sheets and only allowed 1 goal.
DF: Andrea Barzagli (Juventus) – Helped the Old Lady to a 2nd place finish in the group appearing in 6 matches.
DF: Thiago Silva (Paris) – the backbone of a team that only conceded 1 goal in the Group Stage.
DF: Diego Godín (Atlético) –Played every minute as Atletico Madrid topped Group C allowing only 3 goals in the Group Stage.
DF: David Alaba (Bayern) – In his 4 appearances, Alaba was solid in the back and was able to add in the attack with 1 goal and 1 assist.
MF: Sven Kums (Gent) – Scored the lone goal from the penalty spot to help Gent to their first Champions League win and ultimately to their first appearance in the knockout phase.
MF: Willian (Chelsea) – Scored 5 goals and was critical in erasing the Blues domestic form and helping them qualify for the knockout phase.
MF: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) – Was a key contributor in Manchester City’s run to group winners of Group D. He scored 3 goals and added an assists to give the Citizens a great position to advance to the quarterfinals.
FW: Thomas Müller (Bayern) – Was the second leading goalscorer for Bayern Munich with 5 goals (behind Robert Lewandowski’s 7 goals) but is still the leader in attack for the Bundesliga side.
FW: Hulk (Zenit) – Just as much a part of the build-up as the finishing, Hulk was tied with 4 other players for the lead in assists with 4 and knocked in 3 goals in his 5 appearances.
FW: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) – Scored 11 goals in the group stage and had 25 attempts on target, the leader in both categories.
