The front of the Barcelona jersey is sacred ground.  The Catalan club was the last major club not to paste a logo on the front of the jersey but that ended with their unique deal with UNICEF on September 7, 2006.

The deal was unique in that it had Barca paying UNICEF for the privilege of being on the front of the jersey rather than vice versa.  UNICEF is no longer the main jersey sponsor for Barcelona, having moved to a position on the back of the jersey in 2010, but the 2 organizations are still close and on Monday they extended their partnership until 2016.

Barcelona will contribute $2 million per year to support UNICEF programs and continue to wear the children’s charity logo on the back of their jersey.

UNICEF was replaced on the front of the jersey when the Qatar Foundation bought the sponsorship in a 5-year $201 million deal in 2010.  It was the most lucrative jersey sponsorship deal at the time it was signed and the first time in Barca’s 111-year history they had been paid for the placement.

The Qatar Foundation has since been replaced by Qatar Airways.
