A great many Americans clocked in this weekend, including Clint Dempsey, who struck Fulham's late equalizer in a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth.

The U.S. international hopped off the bench on 71 minutes to convert an Erik Nevland cross in the waning moments, thus earning the share and opening his season account.

Meanwhile, Tim Howard made some strong saves as Everton rallied for a 1-1 draw with holders Manchester United at Goodison Park.

Aston Villa keeper Brad Friedel held up his end of the bargain with several fine stops as the home side routed Wigan 4-0.

In the Championship, Frank Simek returned to the bench, but did not feature in a 3-1 loss at Birmingham.

Marcus Hahnemann didn't have a great deal to do as Reading were held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Queens Park Rangers. Bobby Convey did not dress for the Royals.

Eddie Johnson
watched from the dugout as Cardiff topped hosts Nottingham Forest 1-0.

Zak Whitbread ceded a tough-to-take handball penalty in the early going, and Millwall never quite caught up in a 3-2 loss at Scunthorpe.

Over in Scotland, DaMarcus Beasley had a rough 75 minutes in Rangers' 3-1 win at Hamilton, while Maurice Edu was not in uniform.

Moving to the Bundesliga, Steve Cherundolo saw yellow during his 90 minutes as Hannover 96 shared a pair with northern rivals Werder Bremen.

Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotić went the distance in a 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin.

In the 2.Bundesliga, Gregg Berhalter marshaled the defense as 1860 Munich won 2-0 away to Osnabrück.

David Yelldell
had a solid outing in goal, but Matt Taylor struggled up front as Koblenz fought Nuremberg to a 1-all draw.

Heath Pearce came on for the final 20 of Hansa Rostock's scoreless stalemate at FSV Frankfurt.

In Belgium, Oguchi Onyewu caught the frame with a free kick header, and tabletop Standard Liège could have used a goal in a 0-0 draw at Genk.

Next door in the Dutch second flight, Charles Kazlauskas went the route in midfield as TOP Oss fell 2-1 at Excelsior.

Heading to France, Rennes defender Carlos Bocanegra went his typical 90 in a 2-2 share with Le Mans.

In Austria's top division, Preston Zimmerman worked the full game at forward as Kapfenberg suffered a 7-3 beating at Red Bull Salzburg.

Heading to Sweden, Charlie Davies and Hammarby came up empty in a 3-0 defeat at Gefle.

In Denmark, Jeremiah White assisted on the opener as Aarhus GF topped Vejle BK 2-1 to climb to fifth place.

FC Midtjylland center back Danny Califf played from start to finish as the team slumped to a 3-0 loss at Brøndby.

Lee Nguyen
worked the final 37 as Randers rallied at the death to post a 2-2 draw against champs Aalborg.

In Norway's top flight, Vålerenga keeper Troy Perkins had his toughest day of the season in a 6-2 loss at Stabæk.

Down a flight in the Adeccoligaen, Cameron Weaver put in a Man of the Match show with two goals in Haugesund's 4-2 victory at Sandnes Ulf.

The striker nodded home a free kick on the half hour and fired a last minute spot kick to raise his season total to nine.

Clarence Goodson
came off the bench late to score for IK Start, but the visitors slipped to third with a 3-2 defeat at leaders Odd Grenland.

Finally, Joe Lapira worked an ineffective 70 minutes of Nybergsund's 1-0 loss at Notodden.
