The World Cup will be followed by more fans in the U.S. than ever before and to help fans get pumped up for this summer’s tournament America SCORES have teamed up with Heitor Pereira, a Brazilian composer, and Songwriters in Residency (ASCAP) to create the anthem “World Cup, It’s Time”.
“The importance of the America SCORES initiative is that through poetry, music and soccer, they combine what we know is necessary for the successful development of a child: a healthy body, a healthy mind, a deeper soul and a sense of community,” Pereira said of the collaboration. “This message must certainly resonate with a lot of the players participating in the World Cup who had humble childhoods and were, at some point, given a chance.”
He went on to say that if Brazil and the USA met in final he will “write a symphony!”
America SCORES is a national non-profit that reaches 8,000 low-income students in 150 public schools in 12 states and 14 major cities. The program combines soccer, poetry and service-learning with the mission of inspiring urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.
This summer’s World Cup was the perfect opportunity for the students to be involved in a global event. The World Cup is the globe’s most watched sporting event. The 2010 World Cup final between the Netherlands and Spain drew an estimates TV audience of 700 million people. And this year’s event is predicted to surpass that number.
Pereira is the perfect partner for America SCORES with this project. The composer is native of Brazil, the host of the World Cup, and has a long history of successful scores in films that includes The Smurfs, Despicable Me, From Prada to Nada, and more. He won a Grammy for the “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist” for his collaboration with Sting and Chris Bottie.
The making of the anthem “World Cup, It’s Time” was a true collaboration with Pereira co-writing it with the 20 6th grade America SCORES Los Angeles students. The entire process was an interactive among the artists.
The passions of music and soccer are close to Pereira’s heart. Brazil is considered the best soccer playing nation in the world and have won a record 5 World Cup titles.
The Songwriters in Residency (ASCAP) is a partner of America SCORES and provides 3-afternoon workshops that allow students to co-write a song and record it in a professional studio.
