The Afghanistan Football Federation and Hummel are making a statement with the unveiling of the women’s national team’s new home and away jerseys.
The Danish apparel company created a jersey that includes the option for a hijab on the women’s jersey. The inclusion of the head cover design element is in line with Hummel’s pursuit to improve the world through sport.
“We don’t sponsor the biggest teams in the world, but we make partnerships with teams and clubs with a story to tell, like Afghanistan,” Hummel owner Christian Stadil said at the launch that was planned as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.
“We try to meet the Afghan people where they are, and right now that is by helping the women play football with or without a hijab.”
The solid red home jersey features a modern v-neck collar with green detailing at the back of the collar and a tapered black detailing at the front creating the ‘V’. 1922, the year the AFC was founded, is printed on the back of the jersey below the collar.

The Hummel chevrons run down the shoulders and sleeves. A native Afghan design in black is used on for the sleeve cuff and waist. A subtle design of a lion is sublimated the front and back of the jersey as well as inside the back of the jersey.
The AFC crest is over the heart while the Hummel logo is embroidered over the right chest.
“For a country like Afghanistan, wearing the national jersey is a form of power and a tool that gives women confidence,” former captain of the women’s team, Khalida Popal (above), said. “Football gave me an identity and I am the person I am because of football.”
The away jersey is the same template in white.
