World Cup years always bring with them the latest innovations for cleats and apparel and 2014 looks to become a revolutionary one for soccer gear.  adidas unveiled the Primeknit FS, the first knitted soccer cleat and sock hybrid, on Wednesday.

The Primeknit FS hybrid will also have a limited edition release and initially will only be available in Black/White/Red.

“Following the launch last week of the adidas Samba Primeknit, the world’s first knitted football boot, we’re excited to be able to give the World a glimpse into the future of our products,” Markus Baumann, Senior VP for Global Football at adidas said.

“The introduction of the adidas Primeknit FS is only the latest chapter of adidas football products and further cements our place as the pioneer of footballing innovation.”

The knitted cleat idea is taking hold but is far from proven among consumers.  Liverpool’s Luis Suarez will debut the Samba Primeknit, the first all knitted cleat, against Manchester United on March 16.  The limited edition release is only available outside of the U.S.

Nike released their version of the knitted cleat today as well.  The Nike Magista is within grasp of the consumer. It will be available for pre-order on April 29 and for shipment on May 22.
