It was one year ago today that the Adidas miCoach Smart Ball was displayed and demonstrated at the Adidas Lab event in London, England. Now, the ball is officially available for retail across Europe and in the United States.
The miCoach Smart Ball is one of the most advanced technological football pieces available. The ball syncs up to an iPhone or iPod Touch via Bluetooth and shows the user a variety of metrics designed to help improve a footballer’s game. These measurements include a user’s shot speed, point of impact, and ball rotation & flight of the Adidas miCoach Smart Ball kick after kick.
Beyond displaying power and spin, the app displays videos and challenges. Footballer’s can analyze proper technique between practicing dead-balls through high-speed footage of professionals. Once technique is mastered, a user can partake in the app’s pro challenges. With this tool, any player can see how their power or spin stacks up against professionals like Manchester City’s David Silva.
Christian DiBenedetto, the Senior Innovation Director for Adidas, said “we’re proud to bring the miCoach Smart Ball to soccer players around the world. There was a huge amount of interest in the concept when we first showcased the ball. The testing feedback from both amateur and professional athletes has been tremendous and we know users will love the engaging and instructional training this ball will bring to their game. It is another great example of the breakthrough innovation we bring to sports to make athletes better.”
While the miCoach Smart Ball is a great coaching tool, perhaps one of the more popular features is the social networking widget. Users can not only share their results, but they can challenge their Facebook friends to step up and beat their power or rotation score. With this incredible technology, players can now see which of their teammates is truly supreme.
